The Outside is In explores the temporal and material relationships and encounters between the ephemeral, transient, poetic and soft material aspects at play at the site - the foyer of the building 86 at the RMIT Brunswick campus - in relation to the dominating and monumental hard material structure of the building itself. The research utilises the shadows and reflections visible in the space as a conceptual site and idea to build the work from. The thing that struck me about the site is the way in which the sunlight and shadows that are cast, and made by the electric lights, infiltrate in a sense into the buildings interior spaces. In a sense they draw and brush out temporary marks and forms that have rapidly changing boundaries, that track and trace paths across the interior.I thought it would be nice to bring the sky and the outside into the space as a kind of intruder into the building, passing through solids.
